演講題目：伽利略的傳奇 (Galileo's Legacy)

Using Galileo as the first recognisably modern scientist, Professor Malin will briefly
describe Galileo's life and times before exploring his astonishing
telescopic discoveries and their implications. The telescope was the
first device to extend human vision, the next was the microscope,
equally influential. This theme is developed to show how Galileo's
perceptions have echoes in today's Big Bang cosmology. Professor Mailn will
also be showing many of his pictures of astronomical objects, so
of which have interesting stories attached to them.

伽利略是第一位公認的現代科學家，他結合了自己所改進的新科技，以及仔細觀察和現有理論，
徹底地改變了我們對宇宙的看法。他對世人展示他的發現，那都是令人震撼前所未見的天體面貌和現象。
他毫無保留地宣揚他對自然現象和事物的各種看法，但卻忤逆了當時權勝一時的教會，
終於導致了他受宗教審判和終身監禁的命運。
今天我們使用從伽利略當年的簡單儀器發展出來的太空和電波望遠鏡，
可以獲致我們無法直接觀察的影像，讓我們知道今天的宇宙，
遠比當年伽利略所能想像的來得更大和更令人驚訝。在今天的演講中，
我會列出伽利略的發現，及其和現代觀測的關係，
以顯示我們的已知，和將要探索的未知。

David Malin

David Malin 大衛·馬林是一位在國際間極享盛名的天文觀測家，他的職業生涯幾乎都貢
獻在天文攝影的領域，他嘗試以各種不同的儀器與創新拍攝技巧，拍攝出無數精彩的
天文影像，這些天文攝影作品具有科學性、更兼具藝術性。


David Malin教授於一九四一年出生於英國，原本是一位化學家，他在英國北部一家頗具
規模的國際化學工業公司工作了許多年，在工作期間，他使用光學與電子顯微鏡，還
有X光繞射科技來研究微小物體，之後他開始轉移他的研究目標到較大且遙遠的事物之
上。


1975年Malin教授加入英
-澳天文觀測站 (Anglo-Australian Observatory 簡稱AAO)，成為天文攝
影科學家，當時口徑達
3.9公尺的全新英
-澳天文望遠鏡 (Anglo-Australian Telescope 簡稱
AAT)才正式啟用不到二個月。
2001年他離開了工作
26年的AAO，開始在澳洲墨爾本皇家
理工大學 (RMIT University)擔任兼任教授，教授天文科學攝影。

在英-澳天文觀測站工作的期間，David Malin研發了底片超增感技術 (hypersensitising
process) ，大大提高了天文拍攝時底片的感光能力。他也發明了如何在底片
(感光版)顯
示影像的技術，因而使他享譽國際。這個前所未有的影像強化技術讓
Malin教授發現了
兩種新型態的銀河系—Malin-Carter ‘shell’(殼星系)以及1987年發現的一個昏暗且巨大的原
銀河系 (proto-galaxy)，之後並被命名馬林一號銀河 (Malin-1) ，這兩種星系是地面望遠鏡
可以看到最暗淡的物體，受惠於
Malin教授研發的技術才得以觀測的到，這種影像處理
過程也因此被稱為「馬林化」
(Malinisation)。這些發現代表了天文影像技術的大躍進，
也是對銀河研究的一大貢獻。

「馬林化」
(Malinisation)這項科技用黑白感光版以三種不同顏色拍攝，再將三張照片合
成，製作出真原色的照片 (三色合成照片
) 。David Malin教授的攝影作品被廣泛刊登在國
家地理雜誌與
LIFE等雜誌的封面上，也成為一系列澳洲郵票的主題，並曾在澳洲、英
國、中國、法國、義大利、印度與美國巡迴展出。


Malin教授發表了超過
120篇科學論文、天文學與攝影專文、並撰寫了
9本書，也是相當
受歡迎的天文與科學演說家。他的作品將天文攝影推向另一更高境界，對後世有廣泛
的影響力，並促進了天文攝影的發展。

David Malin Images, microscope to telescope, seen from pole to pole....
David Malin Images (DMI) is a source of high quality photographs of stars, galaxies and nebulae taken with some of the world's finest optical telescopes and by talented photographers using ordinary cameras. The images cover most of the sky on all angular scales, from the nearby constellations to the Milky Way and far distant galaxies.

Many of these pictures have been made by David Malin, mainly from plates taken with the telescopes of the Anglo-Australian Observatory. These pictures focus on stars and star-forming regions, globular clusters and the endless variety of galaxies. Other pictures, of star trails and constellations, were made with more modest equipment, both by David Malin and his associates David Miller and Akira Fujii.

The pictures are divided according to their source and often according to subject matter as well. The individual pages below take you on a tour of the distant universe with professional telescopes. David Miller's images are beautiful views of the nearest star at the beginning and end of the day and the moon, set in the Australian landscape. In between are the constellations, the star colours vividly captured by Akira Fujii.

A new series of intriguing and attractive images are photomicrographs of crystals. These are images of science but are presented as abstract art. All the images on these pages are available as high resolution digital files as well as prints.

Microscope to Telescope

David Malin has been involved in scientific imaging all his working life. He joined the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO) as its Photographic Scientist in August 1975, shortly after scheduled observations began on the then-new, 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) in June 1975. He is also now Adjunct Professor of Scientific Photography at RMIT University in Melbourne. He was born in England and trained as a chemist, working for many years with a large international chemical company in the north of England. There he used optical and electron microscope and X-ray diffraction techniques to explore the very small before turning his attention to much larger and more distant things in Australia. David has published over 120 scientific papers and a similar number of popular articles on astronomy and photography, as well as seven books. His contributions to photographic science and astronomy have received international recognition, including honorary degrees from two Australian universities.

我們沒有演講稿的內容 ,何況這些也是 大衛‧馬林 個人知識  .
只能說 大概是如下 , 先介紹當初做化學工程師 做過 DDT ?  , 還有機會使用顯微鏡 , 拍了一堆放大照片
最後還有使用電子顯微鏡 , 拍 鎢鋁合金 並使用不同顏色疊圖 ,
不過 David Malin 拍到 LD  還有唱片上 5um  ..我在想 , 原來我也和他一樣 , 我做的電路是 0.35um
以前還到 0.18um  process , 每次使用顯微鏡去看layout , 卻從沒想過拿公司顯微鏡看看 "昆蟲的臉 "

後來David Malin因故離開 ,   因為他當年沒有 phd 學位 , 不過 最後他有拿到 phd 學位.
David Malin 到 澳洲天文台 把以前光學上知識應用在天文觀測上 ,David Malin說 他太晚接觸天文 , 因為他發現天空宇宙的美
也是很美, 還有很多須透過不可見光才拍得下來 , 透底片上 unsharp mask 應用出來 . 分析一堆資料 , 發現一堆暗的結構 ,
如 galaxy 其實有星環

 大犬座矮星系也因為與銀河的交互作用，使得殘骸在盤面上環繞著銀河

David Malin說早年 人是在望遠鏡頭前端 籠子內 , 數位化後不須要人窩在那邊 ,
David Malin說 很懷念 以前 , 因為當眼睛完全適應黑暗後 ,可以看到很多東西 ,  但是現在科學家都直接在家中透過電腦連上望遠鏡觀測 .最後還有說南半球星空美麗 .

馬林提及, 世界上只有澳洲的星空沒有污染, 空污光污的來源都住在澳洲海邊, 內陸沒有, 澳洲能看到南天, 澳洲缺少天文家, 歡迎大家過去當袋鼠的鄰居....

馬林的思維, 現在是數位世界, 但是這只是轉換與傳送的數位化, 大然的本質是類比化的, 多少位元的數位化都不足以完整表達大自然的美麗與真實. 數位家們還需要不斷的努力, 才足以與數十年前的化學家成就相當...
