如圖所示,這是v1010 Oph 雙星食變星的測光變化曲線。觀測採用微差測光(differential photometry)*,所使用就是Photoelectric Photometry (PEP) ,利用PMT光電倍增管做感光體,可以測定約0.001等的微光連續變化(*微差測光就是利用一顆已知星等的參考星,去測量另一顆星(或食變星)之間的光度差。這也適用於儀器星等。極適食變星RR的短時間微光度觀測。微差測光也常運用於月掩星,星食或是恆星的行星掩星的搜尋。
PEP在AAVSO 最常使用的觀測系統就是美國老廠 Optec SSP系列光電測光及快速數據計算顯示。如一部11吋口徑反射鏡,利用SSP-3型光度計可測達13等(v band)星等具有良好的線性表現。如使用SSP-5 PMT光電管可測到16-18等v band 星等(已具備專業測光水準)。
