star sense only assists with the initial alignment. After that you can just unplug it. It is not a general purpose platesolver. It is not used in any way to direct your gotos other than hopefully establishing a good star model to begin with.
Starsense uses platesolving to do the alignment. The difference is when one goes to a different target. With Starsense aligning, it can get to another target with some degree of accuracy. With regular platesolving, all I can do is sync the mount so that it thinks it's pointing where it's actually pointing.
Starsense is good for visual when you don't take a camera and computer out with you, and you don't want to align yourself. If you're imaging anyway, there's not much benefit to having a Starsense because it can't be used as a guide scope (for some unknown reason). If it could be used as a guide scope, I'd probably get one. All it needs is to be able to send a picture to a computer every so often
