6月接近地球的罕見小行星是「雙胞胎」
在去年發現、在上個月接近地球的一顆小行星並非單一星體，而是兩顆大小差不多、互相環繞的小行星。這是目前已知的第四個質量相當、接近地球的雙小行星系統。

據NASA網站報導，這顆被命名為2017 YE5的小行星於2017年12月21日首次被觀察到，但有關其物理屬性的細節，直到它在今年6月下旬接近地球時才為人所知。

6月21日是2017 YE5在170年內最接近地球的日子，當時它距離地球600萬公里，這相當於地球和月球之間距離的16倍左右。

透過大型無線電波望遠鏡的觀察，科學家首先得知，2017 YE5可能是個雙小行星系統。而隨後的觀察證實，2017 YE5含有兩顆各為900公尺寬的星體，彼此以20至24小時的周期互繞。
