這次看日時最重要的是保持機動性, 在48, 24, 和8小時前密切注意天氣預報, 如果會有雲, 馬上開車轉移地點.

西部最好的觀測地點是Oregon中部 (海岸線附近太常陰天), 如果有位子我也會考慮去Oregon Star Party看.

为了得到稍微更精确一点的地图，人们使用射角表(elevation tables)和月球边缘图——即从地球上可见到的月球表面边缘。直到最近，天文学家们仍然使用由彻斯特.保雷.瓦特斯于1963年公布的边缘剖面图，以创建日食轨迹图。为了制作这个剖面图，瓦特斯设计了一个机器,这个机器可以追踪700张照片，它们覆盖从地球上看到的每一个月球边缘。

不管怎么样，基于月球勘测轨道器的地形数据，日全食的计算已经是更加精准了。

重新审视一个古老的现象

阿拉斯加航空公司26日宣布，将于8月21日推出一个特别的“日食航班” ，以便于精挑细选出的旅客欣赏日全食奇观

NASA計劃利用兩架 WB-57F 戰機將日食觀賞時間延長5分鐘

NASA決定為在本月21日到來的日全食展開一項計劃--通過兩架上世紀60年代的WB-57F戰機追蹤月球陰影以此來達到將觀賞時間延長近5分鐘的目的。屆時，來自西北研究院的Amir Capsi以及她的團隊將負責這一計劃，他們將讓經過改造后的戰機以460mph的速度在日食軌跡上飛行7分半的時間。

然而這并不是第一次利用飛行延長日食的觀賞時間。1973年，科學家就曾讓協和式超音速飛機以2馬赫的速度追趕了74分鐘日食。然而當時，超音速下的空氣湍流卻妨礙了望遠鏡的觀測。去年也曾上演過一場“追日”飛行，飛機在3.5萬英尺的高空飛行。雖然當時延遲只持續了3分鐘左右的時間，但這對于天文學家來說仍令人激動。

獲悉，WB-57F將從德克薩斯州休斯頓的約翰遜航天中心出發，之后將會在密蘇里州、伊利諾斯州、田納西州的5萬英尺高空飛行。團隊對這兩架飛機的鼻翼進行了修改，這樣他們能讓高分辨率的攝像機在飛行過程中實現30張/秒的拍攝速度。高海拔意味著飛機將被云層包圍，而亞音速則將可能讓人們在日全食的時候獲得最清晰的畫面。另外，高海拔還意味著其拍攝畫面的對比度將比地面的高出20到30倍。

Caspi表示，她希望他們這次可以捕捉到出現在太陽表面的毫微耀斑、小型爆炸。直到現在，科學家還未曾獲得過視覺上的這些現象，而它們被認為是日冕加熱的原因所在，同時也解釋了為什么日冕和磁場看起來是均勻的

日全食期间 美国民众或能观测到一颗掠日彗星

日全食期间天空将陷入一片漆黑.而民众届时也可以看到太阳周围的星星。据外媒报道，科学家现在表示，美国民众有望能够在黑色圆盘旁观测到一颗所谓的掠日彗星 (sungrazer)。 掠日彗星是指近日点极接近太阳的彗星,在运行中掠过太阳外层大气（日冕）。天文学家通常使用日冕仪来观测掠日彗星。天文学家表示，如果日全食期间有彗星从太阳附近通过,降低的太阳亮度有助于民众发现它们。

NASA资助的掠日彗星项目的天体物理学家和首席研究员Karl Battams 在一篇博文中表示：“这对我们来说意味着，在日全食发生的几分钟内，地球上的观察者将会或多或少地看到我们通过望远镜在太空中观测到的东西 - 可能包括彗星！”

Battams打算利用像美国海军研究实验室的大角度光谱日冕仪(LASCO)等设备拍摄图像。如果有机会观测到彗星，他会发布所有的细节。
