然而這艘飛船在經過11年的飛行後，燃料即將用完。來自美國宇航局最新報導，9月中旬至10中旬之間黎明號燃料耗盡，變成一艘幽靈飛船，在接下來的幾十年內，它會一直沉默地繞著穀神星飛行。不過黎明號飛船的生命終結方式與當在以土星最終歸屬的卡西尼號飛船完全不同。2017年9月，為了確保飛船不會傷害土衛六或土衛二上可能存在的未知生命，燃燒耗盡的卡西尼飛船在土星的大氣層中燃燒成一顆流星，最後化為灰燼。然而黎明號飛船目前圍繞的穀神星是一顆沒有大氣的小行星，直接墜落會撞擊地面，給穀神星帶來污染。所以有科學家稱：請不要將飛船降落穀神星，請遠離穀神星。目前黎明號飛船正用最後的燃料遠離穀神星。
