Hi Folks,
 
Very interesting orbit for this object on the possible comet confirmation page.
16 observations over an orbital arc of 1.9 days shows a perihelion distance of 0.16AU in October 2018.
If i constrain e=1, I get 0.27AU in mid September 2018.
More observations are encouraged but the current magnitude is quite faint (m=20).
let’s hope the orbit holds true.

New comet C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS) was discovered 2017-Aug-17 at magnitude 21.8 by the Pan-STARRS survey team J. Bulger, T. Lowe, A. Schultz, M. Willman, K. Chambers, S. Chastel, L. Denneau, H. Flewelling, M. Huber, E. Lilly, E. Magnier, R. Wainscoat, C. Waters, R. Weryk using the 1.8-m Ritchey-Chretien Pan-STARRS 1 survey telescope on Haleakala. MPEC 2017-S160: COMET C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS)

The object's retrograde orbit is inclined 99 degrees from the ecliptic with the object currently at 4.9 AU from the sun.

C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS) dramatically changed after outburst

 It becomes much diffuse and bigger quickly. Now it is not so easy object for 15-cm telescope as few days ago.

C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS) in outburst, 30 days before perihelion

The outburst that started on July 15th is still developing. Last night, the comet was slightly brighter and a lot larger than the night before, approaching +8 mag with a coma diameter of about 8 arcminutes. The bright central condensation is still present, indicating that the nucleus is still intact. The thin tail is visible, but difficult due to star interference.
C/2017 S3 will reach perihelion on August 15th, at a distance of only 0.21 AU from the Sun. It is not expected to survive beyond perihelion.
The comet is now moving closer to the Sun in our sky. It will become unobservable in late July.

Photometry (APASS V magnitude unfiltered, 242" aperture radius): m1 = 8.5 +/- 0.1 mag
Nuclear magnitude (Gaia G magnitude unfiltered, 8" aperture radius): m2 = 12.3 +/- 0.1 mag
Bright central condensation, outer coma 8.1 arcminutes in diameter, circular
Larger and slightly brighter than on 16 July 2018
Thin tail 4.5 arcminutes long in PA 288° (interference from background star)
Comet altitude 26.1°

Hello all,

Not only is comet C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS) fading (last night, the central condensation was about 1.5 magnitudes fainter than three nights ago), but the orbit apparently changed as well. My orbit calculations (using Find_Orb) are based on the data published by the MPC (last observation was May 21) and my own observations in the last two months. It was quite easy to find an orbit for all data up to July 20 (mean residual of 0.46“). However, that orbit turned out to be inconsistent with my astrometric results obtained since July 21. The problem is document in the table provided below.

My G40 observations from last night (July 23) can be made consistent with the observations until July 20 by subtracting 52 seconds from the true observation time. In other words, the comet appears to be delayed by 52 seconds now. For my H06 observations on July 21 the delay is about 30 seconds. The apparent delay could be a sign of disintegration.

这个天体最近经历了两次明亮的爆发,一次是在六月底,另一次是在七月底。

正是第二次爆发导致这颗彗星周围出现大量气体云,使其发出绿光  彗星周围的气体直径达161,000英里,当天体飞向太阳时,光芒本身就是电离的结果。据悉,在到达地球的最近距离点时,PanSTARRS C/2017 S3将距离地球约7000万英里,这意味着它不构成威胁。

NASA JPL近地物体研究中心经理Paul Chodas在接受《Live Science》采访时称,虽然这颗彗星目前还不可见,因为它过于靠近太阳.但是本月晚些时候,当它移动得更远时,世界某些地方的人们可能会看到这颗彗星
