第46號短周期彗星46P/Wirtanen目前（2018年10月底）亮度在9-10等左右，以口徑8-10公分以上的望遠鏡在無光害處可觀察，用天文攝影方式記錄下來更好。

到11月中旬之前，都位在南天的天爐座和玉夫座之間，幾乎整晚可觀察，但傍晚至午夜的觀察條件比較好。此處幾乎接近銀南極之處，恆星極少，因此應該更容易觀察到這顆彗星。

11月下旬之後，彗星位置從天爐座逐漸北移，此時亮度估計已在5-6等左右，在光害少的地方，用雙筒望遠鏡觀察即可，且整晚可見，觀測條件非常好。

掩星時恆星仰角270度，地平方位260度。

香港和整個澳門在可能見掩範圍；

台灣西北部萬里區、北投區、五股區、龜山區、大囿區、中壢區、觀音區、新屋區在見掩範圍，除了台南墾丁國家公園區域外，
台灣其它地區在可能見掩範圍。

这颗彗星将是肉眼可见的。此外，46P 会与地球近距离接触，在现代彗星中可以排到第 10 名  Wirtanen 含有大量挥发性的冰，在被加热时，其彗核周围将呈现明亮的气体和尘埃云。除了肉眼观测，虚拟望远镜项目团队还会在 12 月 12~16 日推出线上直播。

因为过度活跃的 46P / Wirtanen（圣诞彗星），正在进行历史性的近距离飞越。所谓近水楼台先得月，旗下拥有强力望远镜的美国宇航局（NASA），可以借助哈勃、钱德拉 X 射线天文台、以及 Neil Gehrels Swift，全方位无死角地为我们播报它的最新进展。随着圣诞的邻近，NASA 适时地为我们送上了这颗节日彗星的靓照。

由于 46P / Wirtanen 离地球很近，使得天文学家可以研究它的具体构造。以及当它暴露在阳光辐照下时，内部的气体会发生怎样的变化。

此外，NASA 借助红外天文学平流层天文台（SOFIA），在彗星抵近的 12 月 16 日当天，拍下了它在 4 万英尺（1.22 万米）处亲密掠过地球时的照片。

    SOFIA 的主要任务是研究彗星中的水，很多天文学家都认为，地球上的水资源，可能来自于彗星和小行星。

    虽然 46P / Wirtanen 已经远离地球，但如果你仔细观察，还是可以在夜空中瞥见它的身影。
