8月初觀測報告在9.5等左右，增亮速度非常快。原本預計它在2017/10/14-15通過軌道近日點前後，將可亮至+7.5～+8等左右，但按照目前這樣的亮度增加趨勢，很可能將比原本預計的還要亮許多，彗星專家們呼籲有興趣者不妨一起參與這顆彗星的追蹤監測。


　C/2017 O1 (ASASSN)彗星10/15過近日點時，距離太陽約1.499AU，大約在火星軌道附近，此時也是它最亮之時，位在御夫座、英仙座和鹿豹座之間，約在晚上21:30左右升起，但凌晨的仰角比較高，觀測條件較佳。

　　C/2017 O1 (ASASSN)彗星是個長週期彗星，軌道橢圓率（偏心率，e）高達0.996703，代表它的軌道非常扁長，半長軸達454.58AU，其實近日點距離只有1.50AU，可是遠日點原在907.66AU之外，使得它繞太陽一週的時間長達9691.95年。
